It’s summertime, which means it’s time for another reminder: Parents, talk to your children about bike and longboard safety. Residents, abide by bike and longboard safety rules.

While it’s great so many people can enjoy the outdoors, area residents need to be aware of bike and longboard traffic rules. Bicyclists and longboarders need to obey all traffic laws (which includes riding bikes in the street) and should wear a properly fitted helmet. Make sure the bike and/or longboard is properly working — check the tires and brakes before going on a ride.

Don’t forget one of the biggest rules, either — make sure you’re able to be seen by motorists. Austin and Mower County haven’t had a fatal bicycle or longboard accident in several years, but it seems like there’s at least one accident involving a motorist hitting someone on a bike or longboard every summer. That’s dangerous for everyone involved.

Be sure to be aware of your surroundings this summer. Motorists should strive to be aware of bicyclists and longboarders. Bicyclists and longboarders should be aware of traffic patterns and strive not to roll into a busy intersection. After all, cars are a lot bigger and heavier. Let’s keep everyone safe this summer.
