ST. PAUL — Hayfield junior Cody Carpentier didn’t even attend Hayfield High School and he wasn’t even sure of how to compete in the discus a year ago.

Thing have changed a lot.

Carpentier took fourth place in the discus at the Class A state track and field meet in Hamline University Saturday after he landed a throw of 158-9, which was his best throw of the season. Carpentier, who transferred from Stewartville to Hayfield this year, threw the shot put last season and picked up on the discus pretty fast this year.

“Towards the end of the year I started hitting it hard and in Subsections and Sections I popped a good few good throws. I’ve been thinking positive,” Carpentier said. “It was nice, moving to a new school with a new coach. He knew a lot and he helped a lot with my learning of the discus.”

Chatfield’s Jayme LaPlante won the discus with a distance of 162-8. Carpentier is hoping he’ll be throwing close to that distance next season.

“Hopefully I can come back next year,” Carpentier said. “I’ve got my eyes on shot put and hopefully discus can go well too.”
