Austin postal carriers gathered just short of 9,000 pounds of food Saturday as part of its annual food drive.

Mail carrier Bob Rosel said carriers will most likely bring in a few hundred pounds of food Monday, as well, pushing the total up to around 9,000.

“It’s a little bit down compared to last year,” Rosel said.

For the last five years, the drive has brought in an average of 10,000 pounds. Rosel said every year fluctuates, and there is no specific reason the number is down this year, besides maybe the rain. Regardless, Rosel is still excited to see so much food donated.

“I know it makes a difference,” Rosel said.

Albert Lea postal carriers collected about 15,592 pounds as of this morning. They will also likely collect a few hundred pounds more on Monday.
