Big things to bank on for art

We’re banking on big things from the Austin ArtWorks Center.

Thursday’s announcement that the Austin Area Commission for the Arts reached a rental agreement with property owner Patrick Bradley to open the ArtWorks Center inside the bank building at 300 N. Main St. was a longtime coming. Though the announcement was anything but a surprise, it’s a great step in a community with a growing focus on the arts.

It’s a win-win for property owner Patrick Bradley and ArtWorks officials. Bradley has been seeking a tenant for the space for some time, and the deal gives the Austin ArtWorks Center a prime and visible home in the heart of downtown.

The location proved successful even before the deal was announced Thursday. The AACA has held several successful events at the building, like the Build Art Bike Show, Music at the Bank and the Buy Art! fundraiser.

ArtWorks officials kicked off a “fast and furious” fundraising campaign, and The Joseph Company will begin remodeling the space in May. If all goes according to plan, the AACA will hold a grand opening in August during the Austin ArtWorks Festival.

With classroom space, studio space, gallery space and a wine bar, the ArtWorks Center holds much potential. The future is bright, and we’re confident the center can be a source of community pride for many years to come.
