Austin sophomore Craig Heimark knew he had done something special when he got out of the pool after swimming the 100-yard freestyle during the Packers’ dual meet with Rochester Mayo, but he wasn’t exactly sure what he had done.

When Heimark talked to a couple of his friends after the race he realized he had just made Austin High School history by breaking the school record in the event and the Packers went on to beat Mayo 93-88 in Bud Higgins Pool Thursday.

Heimark beat his previous best time in the 100-freestyle by at least a second as he swam a time of 47.98 seconds to set a new Austin standard. The original record of 47.99 seconds was set in 1992 by Steve Logterman.

“I decided to go in and swim my best and I ended up breaking the record,” Heimark said. “I’ve always wanted to be the best. Now it’s happening and I’ve just got to keep working.”

Heimark already had his name in Austin’s record books before Thursday as he was a member of the 200-yard freestyle relay team that set a school record time of 1:29.36 at state last season.

That team included Nick Brehmer, who now swims at UW-La Crosse. Brehmer, who holds the Austin 200-yard freestyle school record, contacted Heimark shortly after Thursday’s meet.

“Last year’s experience really helped me and Nick’s been really encouraging,” Heimark said.

Heimark also won the 200-freestyle in Thursday’s meet.

Austin’s Ben Carroll took first in the 200-yard individual medley, Ian Christopherson took first in the 50-yard freestyle, Alec Anderson took first in diving, Ben Walker took first in the 100-yard butterfly and Sawyer Myers won the 500-yard freestyle
