Best Bets: Fundraising frenzy, and jazz cool-down

One of the biggest events of the county is set again to take the stage this weekend in Lyle. Those who can’t handle all the action, though, can settle down with a little Jazz back in Austin on Sunday. Here’s to the roller coaster of emotions:

1. Cash toward cancer

6 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 17 and 18, cancer auction, Lyle American Legion, 112 Grove Street, Lyle.

Bust out the checkbooks, whip out the cash and even bring the credit cards: The annual Lyle Area Cancer Auction is back, and this year it is accepting credit/debit cards for payment. The wild event will go until 1 a.m. Saturday on the first day, begin at 11 a.m. again Saturday and continue until the last items are sold, usually 1 or 2 a.m. Sunday.

2. Buy art

5 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 17 and 18, fundraiser, Bank Building, 300 N Main Street, Austin.

Get some new colors for that bare wall. The Commission for the Arts received a donation of 150 prints from the Cedar Gallery in Owatonna, which closed, and those prints are on sale to help raise funds for the ArtWorks Center in Austin. The Buy Art! sale will be 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

3. Inspiring stories

6:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 17, author visit, Village Cooperative, 2301 10th St. NW, Austin.

She suffered through polio as a child, but got stronger and has persevered throughout her life. Her author and speaker Linda Christianson’s inspiring story during her visit to Austin’s Village Co-Op. The program is free and open to the public.

4. Hockey and honor

2-7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, scholarship event, Austin Eagles Club, 107 11th St. NE, Austin.

Tyler Brady died Feb. 10, 2012, but his memory will carry on every year with the Tyler Brady Memorial Hockey Scholarship event. This year’s event, at the Eagles Club, features plenty of silent auction items, drawings, music and food. Proceeds go to the scholarship fund, which is distributed to families in need of assistance paying for hockey equipment.

5. Just jazz

3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 19, jazz concert, Paramount Theater, 125 Fourth Ave. NE, Austin.

The Austin High School jazz band will soothe the soul with a jazz concert at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Paramount. The event is $5 for adults and $3 for students
