Port Authority to discuss potential new director

The Austin Port Authority will discuss hiring an interim executive director and Bellisio Foods, Inc.’s proposal to buy the former Austin Packaging Company building for about $680,000 during its next meeting at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Former City Administrator Jim Hurm served as the executive director of the port authority before he was fired last week by the Austin City Council. Finance Director Tom Dankert said it’s uncertain who the port authority would appoint to the position, if the port authority chooses to appoint someone at all.

In addition, Bellisio Foods is choosing to exercise its right to buy out its lease of the old Austin Packaging Company building by February 2014. About $380,000 of the lease cost will go to the city of Austin, with the remaining $300,000 going to the port authority.

The Austin Planning Commission is also meeting next week, at 7 p.m. Tuesday, to discuss reclassifying land owned by a subsidiary of The Hormel Institute from single-family residential land to a multi-family residence-office district as part of the Institute’s upcoming expansion.
