ST. PAUL, Minn. — Minnesota Republicans are taking their party headquarters from the shadow of the state Capitol to a less-glamorous neighborhood in Minneapolis.

The move was announced Monday and will be made by the end of January.

Party chairman Keith Downey says the shift was done both to save money and to get outside of the state’s political beltway. The new office is in the Minneapolis Seward neighborhood.

The GOP has been struggling for years with steep debt. It had renegotiated its lease for its current space a block from the Capitol after receiving an eviction notice.

Downey has been working to lower overhead costs so the GOP has more money to spend on campaign activities.

State Democrats have their headquarters in an office building on the southern edge of St. Paul.
