Hayfield’s Wagner signs with Gopher softball team

Hayfield senior Dani Wagner signed her national letter-of-intent to play softball with a partial athletic scholarship at the University of Minnesota at Hayfield High School Wednesday.

“It seems unreal,” Wagner said. “I never thought I’d get the opportunity to play at the D1 level or to represent my home state. I always knew I was pretty good at softball, but I never thought I’d be able to play at that level.”

Wagner was three-time all-state selection in softball for the Vikings and she’s also been a solid volleyball and basketball player for Hayfield. As she focuses on softball, Wagner will have to cut back on her time playing basketball and volleyball, but she’s hoping she doesn’t have to give them up completely.

“It’s really going to be tough,” she said. “I am so happy to get the chance to continue playing softball, but it’s just not going to be the same without basketball and volleyball. Hopefully I have time to play some intramural sports on my free time.”

Gophers’ head coach Jessica Allister said that Wagner can play just about anywhere the Gophers.

“Dani is as athletic as they come,” Allister said in a press release on the University of Minnesota Web Site. “She is a three sport athlete who we think is really going to blossom in a year round training program. Dani is another versatile player that could help us at a number of positions.”

Wagner, who is a catcher for the Vikings, hit .603 this past spring with 5 homers, 6 doubles, 5 triples and 25 RBIs.

The Gophers finished 36-19 overall last season as they were knocked off in the Regional tournament.

Wagner had one other offer from Indiana State, but she wanted to stay close to home and play for the Gophers.
