Hayfield baseball team advances on 7th inning suicide squeeze

HAYFIELD — The Viking baseball team pulled off a thrilling come from behind win to beat No. 6 Randolph (3-10-1 overall) in the Section 1A West quarterfinals in Riverland Thursday.

The No. 3 Vikings (7-11 overall) won the game in the bottom of the seventh when JB Stackhouse laid down a suicide squeeze bunt to a score a run.

“We had our big clean-up hitter and nobody saw it coming,” Hayfield head coach Kasey Krekling said.

Hayfield trailed 2-0 heading into the seventh with the bottom of the order up, but Cam Rutledge, who picked up the mound win, lined a two-run single into left field to tie the game at 2-2.

“It was looking bleak and we didn’t hit very well until the seventh inning,” Krekling said.

Hayfield will play Southland (13-2 overall) in the Section 1A West semifinals in Riverland Saturday at 10 a.m.
