Mardean Llewellyn Spiten, 81, of Kasson, Minn., died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013, at his residence in Rochester, Minn.

Mardean was born Nov. 10, 1931, at his farmhouse in Olmsted County, Minn., to Martin and Lydia (Simonson) Spiten. He attended Hayfield schools and later served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. On July 12, 1986, he married Sharon Reyerson at Evanger Lutheran Church. Mardean dedicated his life and talents to farming on his land near Rock Dell. He carried his passion for farming with him, even as he retired in Kasson in 2000. Mardean was also a member of the Hayfield American Legion. Later in life, he became an avid coin collector and enjoyed spending time with his caring wife.

Mardean is survived by his wife, Sharon; two daughters, Kimberly (David) Kilian of Waseca, Minn., and Angela (Kristian) Omicioli of Warwick, R.I.; grandchildren Emily Smith, Kaleb Smith, Hope Kilian, Jackson Kilian, Madeline Omicioli, Gates Omicioli and Cameron Omicioli; great-grandson Lucca Trejo; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Eugene and Gilmore, and nephew Richard Spiten.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013, at Evanger Lutheran Church 33554 660th Ave., Sargeant, Minn., with the Rev. Dwight Dobell officiating. Burial will be at Evanger Lutheran Cemetery with military honors provided by Hayfield American Legion, Rothie Post No. 330. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, 2013, at Czaplewski Family Funeral Homes in Hayfield and one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church.
