MANKATO — Mankato police and the state’s Bureau of Criminal Apprehension are investigating the death of a man found unconscious in the entryway of Hy-Vee in downtown Mankato.

Andrew Derek Layton, 26, of North Mankato was awakened in the grocery entryway at 4 a.m. Jan. 1. He at first became combative but was eventually transferred by ambulance to the Blue Earth County Jail.

When they arrived, Layton had stopped breathing and had no pulse, but life-saving measures revived him. He was transported to Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato, where he died Saturday.

The Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office is doing an autopsy, the results of which have not come back. The BCA has agreed to conduct the death investigation.

Layton had been charged in the past with felonies ranging from drug possession to burglary. A previous Daily Herald story detailed one case where it took four officers to restrain Layton after a brief attempt to flee. In that incident, he was charged both with striking an officer and possessing methamphetamine.
