Doris O. Bakke, 88, Austin

Doris O. Bakke, 88, of Austin, Minn., died Friday, Jan. 18, 2013, at Good Samaritan in Albert Lea, Minn.

Doris was born in a log house on Jan. 28, 1924, to Melvin and Regina Omodt in Black Hammer, Minn. She graduated from Spring Grove High School. In 1945 she married Pete Bakke.

Doris’s life was spent as a very good mother, Avon Lady, singer and volunteer for St. Olaf Hospital and St. Mark’s Lutheran Home. She also enjoyed volunteering at St. Olaf Lutheran Church.

Doris and Pete had five children, Robert (Ruth), Berlin, Germany; Richard (Terry), Baxter, Minn.; Reta (Roger) Draayer, Albert Lea; Bonnie (Jeff) Rose, Savage, Minn.; Barbie (Barry) Fritz, Burnsville, Minn.

Her last days were being celebrated at Good Samaritan in Albert Lea where she was very well loved and well attended to, enjoying every activity, bingo game, nails polished, entertainment, good food and her great pastor, Kent. Her last chapter of life was filled with contentment and peace, surrounded by loving, caring nurses, staff and faculty.

Doris lived life and wanted to be here forever, but on Jan. 18, our Lord had a new heavenly forever, so when she fell asleep, he took her in his arms and carried her home for a big homecoming party.

In addition to her five children, she is survived by seven grandchildren, Heidi (Brian) Galey, Ryan (Tabea) Bakke, Christopher Bakke, Justin (Lyndsie) Fritz, Jessica (Chris) Kopp, Erika and Kyle Rose; six great-grandchildren, Joey and Alyssa Galey, Florian and Finn Bakke, Carter and Eli Kopp; siblings, Vivian Brevig, Mabel, Minn., Ione (Eugene) Johnson, Austin, Minn., Raymond (Esther) Omodt, Rochester, Minn., Ardys (Lee) Ingvalson, Spring Grove, Minn., Pastor Norm (Anita) Omodt, Chatfield, Minn.

She is preceded in death by her parents; brother, Alden; grandson, Tait Bakke; husband, Pete Bakke.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with Pastor Kent Otterman officiating. Friends may call one hour before the service at the church on Wednesday. Interment will be in Grandview Cemetery at a later date. Condolences may be left online at www.mayerfh.com.
