While the holiday shopping season is in full swing, so is the giving season. The Herald has a story on Page 1 today about the Salvation Army’s kettle drive, and one yesterday about the United Way’s campaign, which should remind Austin residents that the need is there and every contribution is appreciated.

The United Way of Mower County has a month and a half to go, and hopes to hit the $1.2 million mark, a bold goal considering the group had a record-setting year in 2011, raising $1.03 million. But it needs help to do that.

At the local Salvation Army, Lt. David Amick said the need is growing, as they go over budget every year. The Army launched its kettle drive yesterday, and hopes to raise $60,000 this year after raising $56,500 last year. It’s overall goal is $150,000.

Both organizations keep all of the money raised in Austin and Mower County, helping feed, house, clothe and generally assist those in need here. Austinites should look to those or other local organizations when making contributions this year.
