Silo, silage destroyed in blaze

A silo and all the silage within it were destroyed Saturday near Austin.

According to the Mower County Sheriff’s report, Austin Fire Department and Mower County deputies went to 23711 513th Ave. near Austin for the report of a concrete silo on fire. The 60-foot silo — owned by Joe Sheedy — reportedly contained silage for feeding cattle. The entire silo and silage was estimated to be worth more than $100,000.

According to the sheriff’s report, officials believe the silage spontaneously combusted.
