ADAMS — The Rebels volleyball team didn’t let their miscues get the best of them as they played loose in a clean sweep of Austin by scores of 25-17, 25-17, 25-18 in Adams Tuesday.

Austin (1-15 overall) trailed for all of game one and most of game three, but it tied game two at 12 apiece on a kill by sophomore Alex Hansen before falling back.

Southland's Jana Schammel sets during game one of their match against Austin Tuesday night in Adams.

Southland senior Elizabeth May, who had 12 kills and 12 set assists, said that the Rebels (6-12 overall) have learned that staying upbeat after errors can be a good thing.

“We’ve had a little trouble with that in the past and we’re trying to be more positive about things,” she said.

Southland senior Jana Schammel helped boost Southland (6-12 overall) with a strong mix of setting and hitting. Schammel finished with seven kills, five ace serves, 10 digs and eight set assists.

“We wanted to come out strong and get everyone in the match, since it was parent’s night,” Schammel said.

Schammel has made the transition from hitter to setter this season and she’s growing more comfortable in the role.

“At first it was really hard, but I’ve practiced it a lot and now it’s fun. I still like hitting though,” Schammel said.
