County board eyeing Human Services redesign

The county board will take a closer look at the proposed Human Services redesign Tuesday.

The board will host an informal meeting at 6 p.m. in the board room of the Government Center with staff to discuss what the redesign could look like.

Twelve counties in southern Minnesota are exploring ways to work together and share services in response to high costs and high case loads.

Last month, officials from the counties that make up the Southeast Minnesota Redesign Project met in Rochester for Accenture — the group that created the study — to outline a regionalized Human Services plan.

Accenture told a group that they could reduce costs by about $29 million — a 7 to 9 percent expenditure reduction — over five years if the counties merge into a regional model.

Officials in each county are discussing the proposed redesign to decide whether to move forward.

The changes likely won’t be implemented until 2015.
