HAYFIELD — The Hayfield baseball team has just two upperclassmen on its roster, but the Vikings are growing up fast as they knocked off Goodhue (0-1 overall, 0-1 HVL) 12-7 in Hayfield Thursday.

Hayfield freshman Cam Rutledge shined in his first career pitching outing as he didn’t allow an earned run in picking up a three-inning save.

“Carter came out and threw strikes and did his job,” Hayfield head coach Kasey Krekling said. “He just pitched great.”

The Vikings (2-0 overall, 2-0 HVL) finished with 10 hits but they did just as much damage on the bases as they stole 11 bases as a team.

Senior Will Waggoner had three steals to go along with his two RBIs.

“I saw their catcher in warm-ups and I felt we could steal at will on him and that was big for us,” Krekling said.

The Vikings allowed a three-run homer in the top of the first, but they responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the first and they put led 8-3 after three.
