PINE ISLAND — The Hayfield baseball had to hold its breathe for a little while, but it finished the job as it won its season opener 9-7 in Pine Island (0-1 overall) Tuesday.

The Vikings (1-0 overall) led 9-2 going into the bottom of the seventh, when PI’s bats got going. Hayfield junior Jason Born picked up the save when he forced a groundout with two outs and a runner on second to end the game.

Hayfield sophomore Drew Streightiff struck out nine and didn’t allow a hit or an earned run in the first five innings of the game.
