WWII Marine veteran honored with Saipan Award

World War II Marine Corps veteran Joseph P. Rysavy, 91, of Austin will be honored with the Saipan Award at 7 p.m. Sunday at Assembly of God church, 4240 18th Ave. NW.

Cpl. Joseph P. Rysavy served in the 2nd Tank Battalion, 2nd Marine Division. He was a tank radioman on amphibious landings and invasions of Tarawa, Saipan, and Tinian and was awarded the Purple Heart. He also was taken on the Honor Flight this spring.

The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, which includes the islands of Saipan and Tinian, issued a medallion commemorating the 60th anniversary of its freedom from Japan in 2004. Rysavy fought on Saipan during World War II, and at the November Scott Hosier World War II Roundtable event, his sons and grandson will present him with the Saipan Medallion.
