Anti-bullying group looking for input

The anti-bullying campaign started by community members is picking up steam. The group is looking for a name, a slogan, a logo and a tagline, and they’re asking for the community’s help.

“It’s open to the public,” said Danielle Borgerson-Nesvold. “Let’s put the power in their hands to come up with the name.”

Group members decided to let the public come up with a name after similar contests took place at Neveln and Southgate Elementary schools. Members wanted to get other students involved as well.

It’s not just students getting involved either.

“We’ve had people from all backgrounds, not just teachers and parents, that are really passionate about changing what’s happening in our schools, they’re really passionate about changing bullying,” Borgerson-Nesvold said.

The group is working on plans for a pledge that students, parents and teachers would go over at the beginning of the school year, along with recruiting more volunteers to watch bus stops and playgrounds at elementary schools. According to campaign members, there have been several areas targeted by bullies, specifically a bus stop where a bully would beat up students on his way to school every day.

“Bullying starts off-campus and often continues back home again after school,” said Peggy Young, one of the campaign members.

Campaign suggestions will be taken at the customer service area of Perkins, Hy-Vee, Sterling Main Street and Jim’s Marketplace. Members will choose a name, slogan, logo and pledge by the end of May. Then the real work begins.

“Things have to change,” Young said. “And it’s not going to happen overnight, but we’ve got to start somewhere.”
