Melvin “Stub” Perry Corson formerly of Austin passed away on March 15, 2011, at the Regency Care Center in Norwalk, Iowa.

He was born Nov. 13, 1921, in Austin to George and Inga Corson. He served in the US Army with the 9th Infantry Division from June 23, 1942, to Sept. 28, 1945, earning nine battle stars. After returning from WWII, he married Helen Ross on Oct. 14, 1945. Shortly after their marriage, he went to work for Hormel and was employed there for 37 years. Melvin built their home in Austin in 1952 and lived there until 2009. They had two children, Joanne and Pam.

Melvin’s greatest joy in life was his family. He liked nothing better than being with them. His hobby was woodworking. All of his family have furniture that he has made over the years.

Melvin is a member of Grace Lutheran Church. He is a lifetime member of the VFW, and a member of the American Legion.

He is survived by his wife, Helen, formerly of Austin; two daughters, Joanne Corson Hallman of Minnetonka, Pam Larson (Darwin) Larson, Norwalk, Iowa; five grandchildren, Kimberly Hallman, Eric (Sarah) Hallman, Elizabeth (Nate) Riordan, Katherine Larson, Rebecca (Andy) Willson; great-grandchildren and a new one due any day. He is also survived by one sister, Shirley Arett; one brother-in-law, Ronald (Bertha) Ross; sister-in-law, Ruth Ross and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Lester and Kenneth and sister, Mildred Thorson.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 19, at 1 p.m., at Norwalk Christian Church, Norwalk, and Major Marlys Anderson from the Salvation Army in Austin will officiate.
