The Austin girls hockey team didn’t get any wins in the Austin Merchants/Steve’s Pizza Holiday Tournament, but at least they can say they did some things well.

The Packers played two solid periods before bowing out to Spring Lake Park/St. Anthony’s 6-2 in the seventh place game at Riverside Arena Wednesday.

Austin (4-10 overall) was within 2-1 for most of the first two frames until Kelly Morris fired a slapshot past seventh grader Allison Hoban, who had 25 saves, to make it 3-1 with 1:32 left in the third period.

SLP/SA took over in the third when Maggie Ronning scored her second goal of the game early and her squad added two more goals to go up 6-1.

“I thought the defense looked a little tired out there,” Austin head coach Denny Bray said. “After they scored the fourth goal, you could tell they were coming. We didn’t play with a lot of consistency and that’s what we’ve got to work on.”

Austin out-shot the Panthers (4-8-2 overall) 34-31 and it had plenty of chances to tie the game in the second period. Carley Grunewald was stopped on a breakaway by goalie Katie Bassett and Abby Gallaher was denied on a one-timer.

Austin also came out strong in the first period as it fired the game’s first five shots.

“We changed our forechecking system and that worked out real well. I thought we skated great,” Bray said.

Austin got its first goal of the game when Kirsten Stanek, who was named All-Tournament honorable mention, fired a breakaway slapshot past Bassett to make it 2-1.

The Panthers had jumped out to a two-goal lead by scoring twice in just over one minute.

“There were some soft goals, but you’ve got to expect that with an inexperienced goalie,” Bray said.

Gallaher provided Austin’s last goal on a powerplay with 20 seconds left in the game.

Bray was glad to have another tournament with some quality hockey in Austin.

“It’s been a great tournament, we’ve had very competitive teams and everyone seems to be having a good time,” he said.

The Packers lost their opener in the tournament to Northfield 4-1 Monday and they fell to Willmar 5-2 on Tuesday.
