Best Bets: Theater galore coming to Austin

Whether it’s in like a lion or lamb, March is here, and spring is on the horizon. Use that good news as reason to be happy and enjoy some of these upcoming events.

1) Serious theater

Riverland Theatre is set for its first production of the second season with “The Philadelphia Story.” The production, a high society wedding based in the 1930s, opens at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Frank W. Bridges Theatre on the east campus off of 14th Street North. Tickets are $12 or free for Riverland students. The production will also run 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.

2) Youthful performers

Want to see a youth performance? Then go to the Neveln Elementary School fifth-grade play. Neveln Elementary is at 1918 Oakland Ave. E. The play is from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday.

3) A spoonful of music

Do you believe in magic? Well, even if not, believe the fact that the Lovin’ Spoonful will be at the Paramount Theatre, 125 Fourth Ave. NE, at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $35 in advance or $40 at the door.

4) Perpetual pancakes

Pancakes. Yes, again. Beyond the Yellow Ribbon is holding a pancake feed from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the American Legion, 809 12th St. SW, in Austin on Sunday. Be there from 8:30 to 9 to meet and greet local soldiers while carbing up, again.

Other events

Austin is set for a busy Thursday, as well. Head down to the El Parral Ballroom to help Dustin Heckman and others “dig history.” Then check out the free program at the Paramount Theatre, “Miss Representation,” part of the Human Rights Film Festival.

Look to Reporter Matt Peterson’s column every Friday for more about upcoming events in Austin. For even more, check out the calendar on Page 4 every day in the print edition and at austindailyherald.com.
