WASECA — An attorney for a teenager accused of planning to attack a school in Waseca is asking a judge to seal a journal that authorities say includes details about the boy’s plot.

A judge will consider the request at a June 18 hearing, the Mankato Free Press reported. The 17-year-old, who faces multiple charges in juvenile court, was arrested in April after authorities say they found guns, bombs and materials for making explosives, and a 180-page journal.

The journal allegedly outlines the teen’s plans to kill his family, then “kill as many students as he could” at Waseca Junior and Senior High School.

Defense attorney Dawn Johnson said she’s concerned prosecutors will submit the journal as evidence during the hearing.

“A significant portion of the journal is not relevant to the case or the determination of probable cause,” Johnson said in court documents. She also said releasing the entire journal publicly would “seriously adversely affect” a potential jury pool if the case goes to trial.

According to charging documents, the teen’s journal includes an elaborate plan to first kill his family, set a fire to divert first responders, then go to his school with bombs and guns and kill students. The journal allegedly includes his research on explosive chemicals, shrapnel and blast radiuses.

The teen started the journal July 24.

Authorities believe the boy was stopped just weeks before he would have carried out his attack. He was arrested after a citizen thought his activity was suspicious and called police.

Prosecutors have asked that the teen be tried as an adult. Blue County District Court Judge Gerald Wolf has already ordered that the teen be evaluated to see if he should be moved to adult court.
