Update: State Patrol releases names of I-90 rollover victims
A 22-year-old is dead and two Austin teens suffered minor injuries after a crash on Interstate 90 late last night, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.
Around 11:36 p.m., a 2009 Toyota Corolla driven by Jared Burnell, 22, of Pittsfield, Mass., was traveling east on Interstate 90 when it went off the road and rolled near the 200 mile marker, which is near Dexter. The car stopped in the westbound lane and was struck by another vehicle, according to the Minnesota State Patrol’s crash report. According to the Mower County Sheriff’s Office, Burnell was partially ejected from the vehicle and died. Burnell was wearing his seatbelt, and the car’s airbag deployed.
Two Austin teens, Mathias Weinmann and Heather Knutson, both 18, were traveling in the westbound lane in a 2000 Cadillac DeVille and hit Pittsfield’s vehicle. They both were wearing seatbelts and sustained minor injuries.
Road conditions were listed as wet. The National Weather Service in La Crosse, Wis., reported only trace amounts of snow at the time, but wind gusts of 10 to 20 mph out of the north. No alcohol was detected in anyone involved.
The State Patrol and Minnesota Department of Transportation closed one lane of Interstate 90 for several hours, but the lane re-opened early this morning.
This was the second fatal crash in Mower County on Wednesday. In the first accident, a teen driver died after colliding with a Southland school bus on Highway 56.
