Council to discuss rezoning to make way for strip mall

The Austin City Council may finally rezone the property proposed for a strip mall west of Walgreens at 205 14th St. NW during its public meeting Monday.

In November, developers expressed interest in turning the property into a strip mall for retail and office space.

The council tabled the second reading of the ordinance at its Dec. 3 meeting, as city officials needed more time to look over the ordinance. City officials will also hold a public hearing on an amendment to the city’s comprehensive plan to change a land-use designation on the future land-use map to reflect the 14th Street Northwest property rezoning.

In addition, the council will approve the city’s five-year capital improvement plan, which calls for about $103.4 million in funding for capital improvement projects starting next year and running through 2017. More than $27 million of the capital improvement plan projections comes from The Hormel Institute expansion, which received $13.5 million in funding from the state as the Austin Port Authority will own the building portion of the expansion. City staff plan to limit property taxes used for projects, as the city has been successful in investing its money and securing funding from state and federal sources, according to a memo sent to the mayor and city council members.

Council members are expected to allow the Planning and Zoning Department to remove junk and/or illegally stored junk from 1418 Seventh Ave. NW, 1407 Eighth Ave. NW, and 1000 Fourth Ave. NE.
