HAYFIELD — The Hayfield and Southland girls basketball teams each got a long look at their benches as 20 total players scored in the Rebels’ 58-32 win in Hayfield Monday.

No. 10 ranked Southland (18-3 overall), which was coming off its first loss in 13 games, established the tone early as it opened the game on a 19-4 run.

Southland sophomore McKenzie Kirtz, who had 13 points, five rebounds and two steals, helped kickstart her team as she was able to get a few breakaway lay-ups early on.

“We knew we had to come out with intensity and play strong,” Kirtz said. “We knew they were a good team, but if we played good we knew we could take them.”

The 32 points were a season low for Hayfield (14-7 overall) and it was their most lopsided loss of the season.

Hayfield head coach Fred Kindschy pulled all of his starters out of the game when his team was trailing 38-18 with 14:43 left in the game. Hayfield’s reserves got as close as 41-30 with 7:27 left before Southland pulled away.

Kindschy said the lineup change was for two reasons — to rest his squad for Tuesday’s showdown with Kasson-Mantorville and to send a message.

“It was a dual purpose. I told them at halftime that we had four minutes to get into the game,” Kindschy said. “We’ve got to find a little heart. I think this is the first egg we’ve laid all year. I like the way the subs played. They came in and came right at them. They weren’t scared.”

Southland went to its bench when the lead was at 13 and Southland head coach Bob Sheehan liked what he saw after the subs got off to a slow start.

“They came out sluggish, but then we called a timeout and they played with a lot more energy,” he said.
