Rose Pedaler pedals onto new venture

Becky Hartwig, owner of the Rose Pedaler in Rose Creek with her husband, Ken, recently made changes to her business to cater more to bikers who are on the go. The business lies adjacent to the Shooting Star Trail.

After 10 and a half years in business, the Rose Pedaler in Rose Creek underwent some big changes last week.

The Rose Pedaler contains many house-prepared items, along with ingredients from a nearby bakery in Adams, like these buns.

While the business along the Shooting Star Bike Trail was formerly more of a sit-down-style restaurant with gift shop, the owners and founders Becky and Ken Hartwig are now catering more for bikers on the go. The county paved another stretch of the trail last fall, which now leads partially into Rose Creek — past the Rose Pedaler. The Hartwig’s had been waiting for that day, along with their recent business model changes.

Instead of ordering off a menu and waiting for a server, bicyclists and other customers can now swing in for outdoor or indoor seating where they can get quick sandwiches, salads, soups and wraps — including Becky’s favorite grilled chicken wrap. Becky takes pride in the fact that she prepares many of the items and gets others from the nearby bakery in Adams.

“It’s always good to promote the local thing,” she said.

Several burger choices have been added to the menu; Ken prepares his own pulled pork, and a local will even sell fresh produce outside during the summer. The list of items is growing.

“Anything you find in a deli case, we are working on,” she said.

The Rose Pedaler has ice cream, fountain pops, Spring Grove Soda and other desserts, as well.

The Hartwigs are not only excited about the future of their business, but the trail it is married to, as well. Hartwig mentioned the trail may be paved all the way to Rose Creek’s park by July. And she can’t wait for the day it finally connects to Austin.

The Hartwigs extend their summer hours beginning May 1, when they will be open until 7 p.m. They will also be open 8 to 4 p.m. Saturdays and noon to 4 p.m. Sundays.
