No shortage of activities, and don’t forget mom
Variety. That’s what everyone will get within the next week around the county. The season is nearing the time when even the weeknights are grand occasions to get outside or enjoy some entertainment. There’s no shortage this week. And don’t forget about mom.
1. Zonta wine tasting
Wine connoisseurs, enter the Eagles Club. The Austin Area Zonta Club is holding its fifth annual wine tasting event 5:30 p.m. Friday at the Eagles Club, 107 11th St. NE. Taste the grapes, bid on a plethora of silent auction items, and ultimately help the local Seibel Center, to which the funds will serve.
2. Human Rights Film Festival
Free movies, free education and positive messages are all rolled into one at the Paramount. The Paramount Theatre, 125 Fourth Ave. NE, is hosting the Austin for Human Rights Film Festival, and two more days of human rights films are on the docket. “The First Grader” will air at 7 p.m. on Friday, “Babe” (Spanish) will play 2 p.m. on Saturday and “Papers” will air at 7 p.m. Saturday.
3. More garage sales
It’s Rose Creek’s turn for a town-wide treasure hunt; garage sales, that is. Head to Rose Creek for the all-day sales, and arts and crafts at Tammi’s Flowers and Crafts, as well.
4. Family Fun Night
Break up the middle of next with some family and community fun. Take the family down to Mill Pond from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Wednesday for a chance to meet other families and strengthen the community during Family Fun Night.
5. Reza
This next event is only a figment of your imagination. Well, at least the activities within it. Reza, a professional illusionist with Midwest roots will return to the Paramount Theatre since his last performance in 2010. He appears in a blink, boggles the mind with close-up sleight of hand and does it all with the flare of lights, music and choreography. The show starts 7 p.m. Thursday, and tickets are $15 in advance or $18 at the door for adults, and $10 in advance or $13 at the door for students. Remember, it’s only an illusion; or is it?
Other events
For all those dog lovers who want to make a dog park in Austin their own, Saturday is their chance as well. Volunteers will be putting up fencing, so the park can soon come to form. Again, one last reminder. Sunday is Mother’s Day. Treat her to an American Legion special supper, or perhaps Dad’s Belgian Waffles.
