Polling places change for Ward 3 residents

Whether or not Austin residents have decided who is getting their vote, they can now see where they’ll be casting it.

The Austin City Council approved this year’s polling locations for both the Aug. 14 primary election and the Nov. 6 general election. Included with the polling locations was a change to the Ward 3 Precinct 1 location, which has moved from the gym at Woodson School to the Mower County Senior Center.

Following a redistricting earlier this year, some Austin residents are now in a different ward than they were during the 2010 elections. The northern tip of Austin, made up of everything north of Todd Park along County Highway 16, is now Ward 3 Precinct 1. The 270 people in that area were formerly part of Ward 1.

An eight-block area in southwest Austin has also switched wards. The area between Second and Fourth avenues SW, from Fourth Street to Eighth Street, is now Ward 2 instead of Ward 1. About 310 people live in that area.

The primary election will narrow the run down to two candidates for each of the following offices: mayor, council member at large, council member Ward 1, council member Ward 2 and council member Ward 3. It would typically also reduce the candidates for Austin Utility Board down to six nominees, but only five are currently running, so they won’t be on the ballot.

The polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. for each election date.
