Parents of fifth- and sixth-grade students get to learn a little more about I.J. Holton Intermediate School next month.

Austin Public Schools officials will hold information and registration meetings starting Monday, March 4, to let parents know what to expect when their children attend the newest school in Austin this fall.

“This is so people will know what to expect,” Holton Principal Jean McDermott said.

McDermott and other Holton officials will go through the new school’s Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) curriculum and parents will be able to see what classes students will take next year. In addition, McDermott will explain the school’s new one-to-one laptop initiative, where each student will receive a laptop to use throughout the school year.

Austin’s one-to-one program follows a number of area and statewide schools giving students access to technology. McDermott said district officials spoke with other school districts around the state, researching similar programs. McDermott will discuss things like what students can and can’t do on their computers, how the computers will be used at school, various laptop protection plans, and the student laptop handbook with parents.

“We’ve done a lot of research into trying to make this as smooth a transition as possible,” McDermott said.

McDermott said parents should have received notice of each meeting in the mail.

The meetings will take place at the following times:

—Neveln Elementary, March 4, noon – 1p.m., 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.

—Sumner Elementary, March 7, 9 – 10 a.m., 5 – 6 p.m.

—Banfield Elementary, March 12, noon – 1 p.m., 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.

—Southgate Elementary, March 19, noon – 1 p.m., 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.

—Christgau Hall, Austin High School, March 26, 11:30 – 12:30 p.m., 5:30 – 6:30 p.m.
