Wistrcill is ready to join his peers

Roger Wistrcill had plenty of success in his athletic career at Pacelli High School, but he still remembers the time that he let another team score.

Wistrcill, a 1964 Pacelli grad who will be inducted into the athletic hall of fame Friday, can still recall the time when he was a sophomore and threw an interception for a touchdown that yielded Pacelli’s first points allowed of the season.

The Shamrocks won the game easily enough, but Wistrcill feared the wrath of his teammates.

“I thought I was in big trouble, but all of the seniors patted me on the back and said ‘no big deal,’” Wistrcill said. “It was gonna happen anyway.”

Wistrcill made the all-state football team in 1963 and he also played basketball and baseball for Pacelli. He went on to coach high school football at Cumberland, Wis. for 20 years but is now retired.

He’s glad to be headed to the hall of fame to join some of his peers.

“I have memories that last a lifetime and they stick with you forever,” he said. “I’m humbled to be inducted and my whole family is coming back from Colorado, Maine and San Francisco.”
