Honor Society hopes to best 2011 tally with Humane Society fundraiser

It’s that time of the year for the National Honor Society at Austin High School.

The annual spring fundraiser where NHS students stay in the Hastings Gym parking lot to ask for money from passing cars will take place from 6 p.m. to about midnight Friday.

“It’s the kids’ favorite fundraiser of the year,” said Sharon Alms, NHS adviser.

NHS will donate this year’s proceeds to the Mower County Humane Society after hearing about the MCHS’s plans for a new shelter, as well as MCHS volunteers’ constant need for supplies.

The students won’t be the only ones at AHS, however. MCHS volunteers will be present with a few dogs for people to visit with from 6 to 7:30 p.m. NHS members will also accept aluminum cans and donated supplies for the shelter, which can include IAMS lamb meal & rice dry dog food, IAMS dry cat food, bleach, paper towels, dryer sheets and more. For a complete list, go to www.mowercountyhumanesociety.org.

NHS students hope to beat least year’s efforts as well, when they raised about $2,109 for Habitat for Humanity.
