There is no question everyone is thinking about spring this weekend, or at least still hoping for it. However, the weather gods have said, “no.” Defy the cold and snow, and check out the variety this weekend.

1) Lusting for lawn and garden

The annual Austin Home and Vacation show will serve as a reminder that at some point, the snow will melt, I think. Find the best deals for this year’s outdoor projects, visit local retailers and win prizes. The show runs from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at Packer Arena, 601 Seventh St. NE. Admission is just a buck.

2) More for a buck?

OK, it’s already proven you can get something for a buck, but here’s something else for that price. The Minnesota Historical Society’s traveling exhibit, “Minnesota on the Map,” will be on display at the Mower County Historical Society, 1303 Sixth Ave. SW from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays through May 17. This Friday is opening day. The exhibit, which features how maps have changed over the years and why, is hosted by the Mower County Historical Society and Austin Public Library.

3) Pass some time, taste some wine

Nothing better to do on Saturday? Try some wine tasting during a lazy afternoon at the Mower County Senior Center, 400 Third Ave. NE. Free wine, yes, from 1 to 3 p.m.

4) Drifting out of winter

The DC Drifters were hoping for spring, but they’re not going to sing the blues just because it’s not here. They are going to sing, though. The band’s spring fling concert will be 7 p.m. Saturday at the Austin VFW, 300 Fourth Ave. NE. There is no cover charge.

Other events

The Austin Packers boys basketball team in the state title game definitely warrants more than a footnote, but as you’ve probably noticed, it’s plastered everywhere else throughout today’s edition. So don’t forget to cheer on the Pack 6 p.m. Saturday in Minneapolis, or check out a leave blog by yours truly at austindailyherald.com. Also, support some local causes, all while enjoying good meals. The Brownsdale Fire Department, Rose Creek Fire Department and Mower County Fair Board are all hosting feeds/fundraisers this weekend, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
