ROCHESTER — Grand Meadow-LeRoy-Ostrander-Kingland’s Lucas Roe couldn’t have imagined it much better.

A year after he and his teammate Noah Schlee were left at third place in the Section 1AA wrestling meet — the two stood as champions at the Section 1AA meet in Mayo Civic Center Saturday and are now headed to their first Class ‘AA’ state meet of their careers.

“Last year we both ended up third and we just said to each other, we’re going to take it this year and that’s what we did,” Roe said.

Noah Schlee, a senior who is now 33-3 overall, earned his trip to state with a 5-2 win over Austin’s Brennen Russell in the 126 pound finals, but Roe chose a much more dramatic route.

Roe trailed Kasson-Mantorvile’s Corben Hanson 1-0 with just three seconds left in the 152 pound title match when the clock was stopped and Roe was reset in the down position under Hanson.

Before Hanson, who had beaten Roe 5-4 earlier this year, could react, the LeRoy-Ostrander junior was shooting through and free with an escape just before time expired.

“I was just thinking ‘one more go.’ I just beat him off the whistle,” Roe said.

Roe, who is now 33-4, almost got himself in trouble in overtime, but he turned Bensen and picked up a takedown with 36 seconds left in the extra session.

“It’s just a great feeling to come off a win like that, especially after he beat me earlier in the season,” Roe said.

GMLOK’s Wyatt Richardson took sixth place at 170, Perry Stesjkal took fourth at 182 and Richard Bain took third at 220

In Class ‘A’ Hayfield’s Corey Thompson took third at 182, Cameryn Stadler took fifth at 113, Connor Nelson at 152, Garrison Mindrup took sixth at 160
