Austin woman burned by oven

A 26-year-old Austin woman was taken to Mayo Clinic Health System in Austin Sunday night after burning her face during an oven flash fire.

Police, Gold Cross and the Fire Department responded to a call at the 22000 block of 586th Avenue at about 7:12 p.m. Sunday after Brianne Pedersen, 26, called police reporting a fire.

Pedersen told police she noticed an odor coming from her oven, according to Sheriff Terese Amazi. When she went to investigate, she noticed her oven was unplugged. Pedersen plugged it back in and opened the oven door to check if the pilot light had gone out. Amazi said the oven belched fire at Pedersen, who burnt her face and singed her hair.

Pedersen was taken to the hospital. The Fire Department turned off the gas to Pedersen’s home and Austin Utilities investigated the matter.
