Have ideas? Austin does

Vision 2020 leaders are about two-thirds of the way to meeting their goal of compiling 1,000 ideas to better Austin.

Community Development Director Craig Hoium said between 600 and 700 ideas have been collected as of last week.

Although the deadline for submitting ideas is Oct. 14, Vision 2020 leaders are hosting “A Big Night of Ideas,” on Sept. 28, when the group will provide food and entertainment and celebrate the concept of the project.

Hoium said there are no guidelines for ideas, and part of the goal of the project is to get ideas from all parts of the community.

“Any idea we want to welcome, whether it’s low cost, high cost or no cost,” Hoium said in a presentation to City Council Monday night.

Once all the ideas are collected, a committee will narrow the ideas to the top 100. The community will then vote to narrow the list to 30. Next, the committee takes over again, finalizing the top 10 ideas by March 1, 2012. From there, the group will begin working to make the ideas a reality by 2020.
