RE-Fest returns
Free well water testing available at event
The Mower County Soil and Water Conservation District will host a nitrate clinic to provide free water sampling for the public during RE-Fest this Saturday. The district encourages all well water users to bring water samples and find out what their nitrate levels are in their well water.
High nitrates in drinking water can cause potential health problems. Especially in infants younger than six months who drink water containing nitrates in excess of the 10 mg/L, could become seriously ill, and if untreated, may die. Symptoms include shortness of breath and blue baby syndrome.
When sampling, make sure the bottle and your hands are clean. Take the sample as close to the well as possible. It is recommended to collect a water sample before a water softener or filtering system. Allow the water to flow for a few minutes, until it is at a constant temperature. Lower the flow rate and fill you sample bottle up to the shoulder and put the cap on tightly. Ziplock bags will work , as well. The testing, which will be held in the Plager Building, only takes minutes and is free of charge.
