Farm safety event next week

Mower County youth will learn about farm safety at a day camp held Monday, June 18 at the 4-H building on the Mower County Fairgrounds. From 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., Steve Lammers, Archer Daniels Midland outreach coordinator, will teach children about farm safety, including the hazards of ATVs.

Of the leading sources of fatal injuries to youth, 17 percent involved motor vehicles, which includes ATVs, according to the 2004 Journal of Safety Research.

“ATVs are becoming more and more recreational,” said Lammers. “It’s important for kids to know the difference between work and recreational machines, not to mention the difference in handling them in each situation.”

Lammers partners with Farm Safety 4 Just Kids to offer safety education. Farm Safety 4 Just Kids was founded 25 years ago by an Iowa woman after the death of her son in a gravity flow grain wagon accident.
