A powerful decision will be made at Riverland Community College’s Frank W. Bridges Theatre next week. One that could chance American education forever.

That’s what Summerset Theatre’s latest play “Inherit the Wind,” deals with. The play, set to open next Tuesday, focuses on the Scopes Monkey Trial of 1925, where evolution faced off against creation in the courtroom.

“It’s a really interesting script in that some of the actual dialogue was taken from the actual trial,” said director Cameron Davis. This is the first adult play Davis has directed in some time, having worked with Matchbox Children’s Theatre recently.

“It’s a great change,” Davis said.

It’s a great change for the cast, who enjoy the serious aspects to this drama.

“It’s a moving play,” said Joshua Whalen. “It’ll open your eyes. I just find myself lost in the characters at times.”

The play focuses on the trial of a man who deliberately teaches the theory of evolution in a state which has outlawed such practices.

“Everyone was opposed to that,” said Kaylin Wolf, who plays Cooper.

Summerset’s put a twist on the classic production, however. They’ve stretched the stage to make the audience feel as though they’re part of the case, actually sitting inside the courtroom.

“It’s really dramatic,” said Jannel Howard. “It’s a serious play … a true story.”
