Austin Utilities, high schoolers partner on solar education project

Austin Utilities donated compact fluorescent lamps to the Austin High School Go Green Club. Students will sell the CFLs to raise money for a solar photovoltaic installation on the annex roof at Austin High School.

“This project is a great way for us to support solar education, our rebate program and the community,” said Kelly Lady, Austin Utilities energy services consultant.

The Go Green Club aims to raise enough money through fundraisers and grants for a $10,000 3.6 kW system.

More money raised in future years plus money from energy will be used to expand the project in the future.

“The project has been a learning experience for Go Green Club members,” said Kate Schoonover, Austin High School science instructor and Go Green Club adviser. “After the installation in is complete, we plan to monitor the 3.6 kW system and use the information in the future as a study tool in our physics and engineering classes.”

Anyone interested in purchasing one or more of the CFLs or making a donation to the Go Green Club project may contact Schoonover at 507-460-1800, or kate.schoonover
