Joystick takes an early look at Deadpool game

Comic book fans are once again gettting their hopes up after High Moon Studios announced the new Deadpool game last week. Will it be good? Who knows, since High Moon only showed a short trailer at San Diego Comic Con.

Yet there’s plenty of elements to the upcoming game that require a good discussion among fans of violence and comics. That’s why I turned to my video game guru, broadcast worker and budding voice actor Collin Pote to talk about the Merc with a Mouth and our impressions on how good this game could be.

Trey: What do you think of this new Deadpool game?

Collin: It’s kind of weird. It took me by surprise. I definitely wasn’t expecting this one.

Trey: I know right?

Collin: For starters, just the fact a Deadpool game is being made at all is kind of surprising. Quite frankly, after Spider Man and (other superhero) movies came out, I would expect we’d see more games about them. I definitely didn’t see Deadpool coming.

The other thing is that High Moon Studios is making it. They’ve got a pretty good track record with me because they made “Transformers: War for Cybertron,” which I thought was a real sleeper hit the year it came out.

Trey: Uh-huh.

Collin: Fantastic Transformers game.

Trey: Yeah.

Collin: “Transformers: Fall of Cybertron” is coming out this August and that looks even better. I mean, it may suck but it looks darn good. They also made a decent Dark of the Moon game. I mean, I know that they’re all Transformers games but the bottom line is they were making a game based on the license and I thought that they were all very solid titles. If anybody can pull off a Deadpool game, it’s probably them.

Trey: What interests me is the sheer fact that you’ve got a game which is going to revel in its over-the-top violence, in its crude sexual humor and its immaturity. The kind of games that have that happening are few and far between.

Collin: Plus they’re not very good, like that Matt Hazard [”Eat Lead: The Return of Matt Hazard,” released in 2008.]

Trey: For me, I thought it was really interesting that [High Moon Studios] would pick Deadpool. It makes sense, because Deadpool’s just a huge fan favorite right now.

Collin: I’m kind of curious about the direction they’re going to take. It’s probably going to be an action title. I’m wondering if it’s going to be kind of a Devil May Cry clone or if they may try to go in a different direction, what with Deadpool being a mercenary and all. Is it going to be more like Devil May Cry or is it maybe going to be more Hitman? I guess I’m kind of curious if they’re going to give it some sandbox elements, or if it’s straight narrative, but I’m really interested.
