Counterfeit $50s passed in Austin

Two more counterfeit bills surfaced in Austin on Wednesday.

Community Bank detected two counterfeit $50 bills in one of its merchant customer deposits. The Chamber of Commerce did not have other details, but advises all members to remind cashiers to check bills carefully.

Community Bank officials were not immediately available for comment.

Police Chief Brian Krueger said he has not received any other reports on $50s, but notes $20 and $100 counterfeit bills have also been passed in Austin in recent weeks. He advises everyone to check bills with a brown felt pen and look for watermarks; some of the counterfeit bills may be “washed,” lower denominations and reprinted.

Anyone who receives a counterfeit bill should contact Austin Police immediately at 507-437-9400.
