Open house planned for cyclists

The Coast to Coasters — Dick Schindler, Jerry Ulwelling, Julie Thomsen, Roe Erlandson and Terry Fox — stand in the Atlantic Ocean, the end of their ride.

The Austin YMCA is hosting an open house Sunday to welcome back the group of cyclists who pedaled from coast to coast — 3,500 miles — in 30 days.

The cyclists — Roe Erlandson, Jerry Ulwelling, Dick Schindler, Terry Fox and Dave Thomsen — began their voyage from the west coast in the beginning of August and reached the Atlantic Ocean on Sept. 1.

The ride was in memory of Dan Ulwelling, a bicycle enthusiast and founding partner of Rydjor Bike Shop. Dan Ulwelling died of cancer five years ago.

Sunday’s gathering will be at the YMCA from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Julie Thomsen, Dave Thomsen’s wife and driver of the support RV for the duration of the trip, said the public is welcome to come hear stories of the trip. Chocolate milk and cookies will be served, as that was the bikers’ snack of choice each day of the trip after they were done riding.

Julie said people can also order Coast to Coasters T-shirts either at the open house or by contacting her. All proceeds will go to The Hormel Institute for the fight against cancer.

T-shirt’s available
