‘Paint the Town Pink’ closes this weekend

Two new events this weekend will conclude Austin’s second annual “Paint the Town Pink” festivities to raise awareness and support for The Hormel Institute’s world-renowned breast cancer research.

Paramount Theatre is hosting a special showing of the popular 1980s movie “Pretty in Pink” at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Cost is $5 to attend the movie — sponsored by Kathi Finley — and attendees are encouraged to dress in ‘80s apparel. Ticket funds and additional donations will be donated to The Institute’s breast cancer research.

On Saturday, volunteers from the Vision 2020 Waterways Committee will host a first-time “Plunging for Pink” polar plunge event starting at 3 p.m. at East Side Lake’s boat landing along Oakland Place Northeast.

The registration deadline for the plunge has passed. For more information, call the Austin Convention and Visitors Bureau at 507-437-4563. Volunteers also are needed at the event.

Organizers expect to draw about 100 plungers. The Waterways Committee has worked with the “Paint the Town Pink” steering committee and the Austin Parks & Recreation Department to put on the event. Austin firefighters and paramedics will be on site.

Music, food and refreshments will be featured. Starting at 5:30 p.m., a post-plunge party will feature the local Bissen Brothers Band performing at the Eagles Club, 107 11th St. NE.
