Lansing post office continues push to sell stamps for breast cancer awareness

Breast Cancer Awareness Month has taken hold in many places, and even the smallest of places are doing their parts.

The Lansing Post office, just a few miles north of Austin, is pushing to sell as many breast cancer awareness stamps as possible during October.

Since 1998, the US Postal Service has raised $73.5 million for breast cancer research, Lansing postal worker Diane Bergstrom said. Now, she and her co-workers are trying to do their part, too.

Bergstrom was at the Chateau Raceway’s final race of the year promoting the breast cancer stamps, which cost 55 cents and raise 11 cents per stamp toward research. The Lansing office is also promoting a local race car, as well.

“We were happy with what we sold, and we’ve just started,” Bergstorm said. “This is just the beginning of the month, and we’re pushing breast cancer stamps for the whole month.”

Throughout the month, Lansing Post Office is pushing its breast cancer stamps in conjunction with its commemorative pictorial cancellation — the mark that goes over a stamp once it has been used. The commemorative mark features two checkered flags and reads “Race to Cure Breast Cancer.”

Though October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the stamps are available all year long and are also forever stamps.

“If you put them in a safe place and you can’t find them for a while, you don’t have to worry because they’re good forever,” she said.

Bergstrom hopes to attend another Chateau event next year to promote breast cancer stamps. She is enthusiastic about the cause; and like others, she is trying to make more of a difference during October.

“We’re giving it our all,” she said.
