Fourth of July, Blooming Prairie style

Fourth of July celebrations are inescapable this weekend, whether one heads north or south of Austin. That’s because Austin, Blooming Prairie and Lyle are all holding their annual summer celebrations during that time.

Blooming Prairie’s festival, The 37th Annual Old-Fashioned Fourth of July, happens July 2 through 4, with a big list of events each day. The events kick off at 3 p.m. Saturday, with the first ever rib cookoff, held at US Bank’s parking lot. The Little Miss Firecracker contest returns this year, as well, 3 p.m. Saturday. The end of the first day will be capped off by a street dance hosted by J & H Liquor, one of two street dances in Blooming Prairie this year.

Sunday is packed with plenty of youth events, including a dodge ball tournament, face painting, a puppet show and teen dance. The day will be capped off by the second street dance beginning at 8 p.m. with the band “Bad Monkey,” hosted by Blooming Prairie Cue Company.

Though Blooming Prairie’s celebrations are the same days as some of Austin’s, Paul Fiebiger, one of the organizers, said they usually don’t compete. Blooming Prairie draws people from Owatonna, Ellendale and other surrounding towns, and is always popular.

“We do well, and I think Austin does well,” Fiebiger said.

Because Blooming Prairie’s celebration is on a holiday weekend, it tends to draw more people than other small town celebrations. Fiebiger said one of the biggest draws continues to be the 100-plus unit parade, which will be held 2:30-4 p.m. July 4. Street construction on Third Street NW will move this year’s parade route a block south to Second Street NW.

Rock band Arrows at Down will close out the holiday with a show just before the 10 p.m. fireworks.
