Geneva man dies in Blooming Prairie crash Wednesday

A Geneva man died Wednesday morning in a one-vehicle accident involving three people in Blooming Prairie.

Marvin Widlund, 76, died at the accident, which happened at about 9:30 a.m. at the intersection of Highway 218 and Highway 30, according to a Minnesota State Patrol crash report. Driver Sarah Kerns, 38, of Geneva, was not injured, the report added. However, passenger Ruth Widlund, 76, sustained non-life-threatening injuries. She was taken to Mayo Clinic Health System in Austin for evaluation.

According to the report, the 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser was traveling eastbound on Highway 30 when it lost control on ice, slid sideways into the intersection and then rolled. The report indicates Kerns and Ruth Widlund were wearing seatbelts, but Marvin Widlund was not. Airbags did not deploy during the accident.

The Blooming Prairie Police Department and Steele County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the crash.

The State Patrol also issued a statement on Wednesday, which mentioned 17 vehicles went off of southeastern Minnesota roadways on Wednesday morning, 12 of which included property damage, and seven which included injuries.
