Watch for bikes

With school out for the summer, the days of random road risks have begun. Drivers beware.

Unlike the other nine months of the year, when often-inclement weather and tight schedules conspire to keep children out of the traffic pattern except during predictable periods, summer means kids on bikes and skateboards and chasing balls into the street just about anytime. Accustomed to a relatively clear path, motorists now need to be constantly on the lookout for unthinking kids breaking into the driving lanes.

Austin is fortunate in that it’s a relatively bike- and pedestrian-friendly city, with drivers who are usually vigilant. For a few months, though, it will take even more careful watch to ensure that cars and kids don’t collide.
